What is Camden, Maine known for?

The “Jewel of the Maine Coast,” as Camden, Maine is known throughout the state, is a beautiful seaside hamlet with a lovely harbor that is always full and active, especially during the summer months.

Camden is a place filled with history and charm. It’s full of art galleries, shops, restaurants, and inns.

This quaint seaside town is also famous for the wildlife that thrives in the area. Which includes bald eagles that can be spotted on Mt. Battie, harbor seals, and even bears!

Bald Mountain Preserve

Bald Mountain Preserve is a lovely, short, and popular trek up to a 1,280-foot peak with stunning vistas. The trip is approximately 1.3 miles one way, and signs will direct you to the proper path.

For a longer and more challenging trek, head to Ragged and Spruce Mountains, which are accessible via Route 17.

Camden Hills State Park

Camden Hills State Park is a great place to camp with your family. The views are incredible and there is plenty to do in the area.

The park is located about 10 minutes north of Camden on US Route 1, and it offers year-round trail activities as well as camping during the winter season. Winter camping in a rustic shelter is also available by reservation.

Barrett’s Cove Public Beach

If you want to get away from the crowds and still enjoy views of the lake, Barrett’s Cove on Megunticook Lake is the ideal place for families with kids.

Despite being very popular among tourists, it is surprising that Barrett’s Cove Park is rarely crowded. Because of the lake’s warmth, Barrett’s Cove is a great place for families who enjoy freshwater swimming.

Merryspring Nature Center

If you’re looking for a relaxing outdoor activity, Merryspring Nature Center is a great option. This center has something for everyone, from nature trails and gardens to a vernal pool. Enjoy nature and birdwatching in a beautiful setting while getting some fresh air and exercise. 

Downtown, High Street Historic District - Camden, ME

High Street Historic District

The High Street Historic District is a great place to explore with your family. It has a small-town feel, and there are plenty of cool shops to see and explore. You can spend the day shopping and enjoying the historic downtown area.

There are a few great shops in the High Street Historic District that are perfect for kids. Grab some fudge and gifts at The Smiling Cow or satisfy your sweet tooth at Uncle Willy’s Candy Shoppe is a candy shop.

Megunticook Falls

Megunticook Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in the middle of Camden, Maine and overlooks the harbor. The waterfall is easily accessible and provides stunning views. The waterfall is a great place to visit for a family outing.

Camden Snow Bowl

The Camden Snow Bowl is a great spot for families with older kids who love to have some winter fun. The ski area has a variety of slopes for all levels, and the toboggan chute and tubing hill are always a hit.

Don’t forget the food! The Snow Bowl has a variety of food options to choose from, so everyone will be happy.

Mt. Battie Trail

The Mt. Battie Trailhead is an awesome 1.1 mile hiking trail that is a modest 600 feet in elevation. This trail leads you to the top of Mt. Battie where you can see all of Camden and Penobscot Bay on a clear day.

The trailhead is a moderate to difficult but short hike suitable for families with older kids or young children in a carrier.

Harbor Park - Camden, Maine

If you’re looking for some great live music, look no further than the Camden Amphitheater. This outdoor amphitheater has hosted all kinds of live music ranging from professional orchestras to bluegrass artists. Take a cruise on Camden Harbor

Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay offer breathtaking views and sightseeing opportunities.
